The Lifecycle, Dietary & Habitat
Characteristics of Flies
Some true flies, dipterans are a nuisance to humans, especially when present in large numbers. It includes contamination of food and spread food-borne illnesses. The life cycle consists of four stages: fly eggs, larvae stage, pupa, and finally, adulthood.
Lifecycle
From Egg to Larvae
The egg resembles a grain of rice in appearance, with a long and hard outer shell. These eggs are typically in corners near decomposing food and in drains, often in clusters of up to 300. These areas provide ideal conditions for the eggs to hatch within a day and enter the larval stage.
From Larvae to Pupa
The larvae that are develop look like maggots and can vary in size. Ranging from 4 to 12 mm long, depending on their stage of growth and can be white, light brown, yellow, or reddish in colour. Despite their unappealing appearance, maggots play a crucial role in the decomposition of dead animals and other waste matter.
From Pupa to Adult
During this stage, the larvae go through a resting period before transforming into adults. The pupa forms a hard shell to protect itself while undergoing development, similar to a butterfly cocoon.
Adult Lifespan
They have relatively short lifespans, with some species only living for 24 hours. However, larger species can survive for several days or even months. In Malaysia, they thrive because of their ability to adapt well to the warm climate and abundance of food sources.
Anatomy
They possess a pair of wings and a second pair known as "halteres," which they use for balance. They also have five eyes, with their compound eyes covering the majority of their head. Additionally, they have three small eyes called "Ocelli," although their vision is not highly develop. Their body is protect by a hard outer surface that shields its internal organs.
An adult can measure anywhere between ¼ to ½ inch in length. House, drain, moth and black flies are attract to decaying matter such as faeces and dead or rotten meat. It serves as ideal breeding sites. Dead animals are especially important for larvae feeding and growth.
Dietary
They have a diverse range of food sources, including human and animal food, carcasses, garbage, and excrement. Occasionally, they may feed on the sweet nectar produced by flowering plants. House fly and drain flies primarily feed on a liquids diet and algae in drainage. They will feed on animal faecal matters and substances containing sweetness.
Fruit flies, as their name suggests, have a preference for fruits like bananas, pineapples, and grapes. However, they are also consume vegetables such as potatoes and onions.
Blow flies and bottle flies, on the other hand, prefer to feed on freshly killed animals or decaying carcasses. They are definitely unsanitary and carry dangerous and harmful germs on their legs and mouths. This makes them capable of spreading these germs and contaminating food on tables and counters, leading to allergic reactions.

Fruit Fly (Drosophila)
With a yellow-brown colour and brick-red eyes, fruit flies often have transverse black rings across their abdomen. They are commonly in homes, restaurants, and supermarkets, particularly in places where food is rotting. They are active year-round, but their activity increases during the summer and fall when fruits and vegetables are in season.
Bluebottle Fly (Calliphora Vomitoria)
Identified by a grey head and thorax, with a long yellow-orange back of the head and a bright metallic blue and black abdomen. The female lay their eggs in decaying meat, garbage, or faeces, where they feed.
Flesh Fly (Sarcophagidae)
They have a grey body with three clear black stripes on the thorax. The abdominal area features a light and dark grey checkered design and a red tip. They inject larvae into the wounds of healthy livestock, causing intestinal infections in humans who consume the meat.
Sand Fly (Spiriverpa Lunulata)
These tiny insects measure approximately 1.5-3.5 mm in length and have a hairy body, large black eyes, and long legs. Female lay small batches of around 30 to 70 eggs on moist surfaces. Such as sandy beaches with high humidity and organic matter.
Drain Fly (Psychodidae)
They are small, approximately 1/5 to 1/6 inch long, and have a fuzzy, dark to greyish colour. Their bodies and wings are mildly cover with hairs. They can commonly in drain areas like sinks and toilets.

They can extract three ounces or more of blood per day when they are in a group from a single host. They are carriers of various animal diseases, including anthrax and trypanosomiasis.
Phorid Fly (Phoridae)
They have a distinct "hunch back" appearance, with a small head position lower on the arched thorax. They breed in environment that provide moist, decaying matter and can become a common problem in homes. Human infestations from larvae have occurred in areas such as the eyes, wounds, and intestines.
