Most Common Ant Species in Malaysia
Ant Species in Malaysia (Semut)
Malaysia is home to over 800 species of ants, compared to the estimated 22,000 species worldwide. Their main objective is to find a mate and establish a large colony near a food source. With about eight common ant species in Malaysia, it’s no surprise that they often become a source of frustration. Unfortunately, many people are unaware of the risks and threats they pose.
To prevent an infestation, reduce moisture and standing water near your property. Repair leaks and drippy taps promptly. Keep tree branches and potted plants away from your house, as they often use them as entry points.
While various treatment methods exist, engaging us is the best solution for effective and long-term ant control.

The Lifecycle, Dietary & Habitat
Understanding the Life Cycle, Diet, and Habitat of Ants
Ant Life Cycle
They undergo a four-stage life cycle: ant eggs, larva, pupa, and adult. Their larvae are off-white and legless, resembling small maggots. During metamorphosis, a cocoon encloses the pupae until they emerge as adults.
The cycle of an ant typically takes six weeks to two months. From egg hatching to an adult. Adult ants live for around 90 days, but some species can survive up to a year. The queen ant controls the sex of her offspring by fertilizing (or not fertilizing) the eggs.
Ant Anatomy
They are easily identified by their narrow waists, bulbous abdomens, and elbowed antennae. Often mistaken for termites, they have three body segments: head, thorax, and abdomen. Their colours range from black, brown, and tan, to reddish-brown.
Ant Habitat
Most types of ants in Malaysia reside underground, in dead wood, or plant cavities. They can have outdoor nests as well. They can also nest in apartments, kitchens, and bathrooms, where they easily forage for food. They will establish sub-nests in cracks, crevices, and wall voids.
Dietary
They have a diverse diet, consuming proteins and carbohydrates. Many species, such as sugar ants, are particularly attracted to sweet foods. Honeydew, a sticky secretion produced by aphids, is a key part of their diet. Black ants do the same too.
Understanding The Ants Caste
Ant Colony Structure & Roles
Each colony consists of different castes, each with unique responsibilities:
Queen
Solely responsible for laying eggs and expanding the colony. She can live for decades.
Males Ants
Their main role is to mate with the queen before dying shortly afterwards.
Workers Ants
Females gather food, protect the colony, care for the larvae, and maintain cleanliness.
Soldiers
Tasked with protecting the queen and defending the colony. They attack enemies, secure food, and even enslave defeated others’ offspring.
